About Kingdom Overlanding
My name is Jacob! I am the owner of the 2018 Ford Expedition Limited. In late 2019 I had made the decision that I wanted to get my family more involved in the outdoors, and the timing was perfect! I was on the tail-end of my 12 year career in the Arizona Army National Guard and I was looking forward to getting some of my vacation time and weekends back for my family. While I have grown up camping and being outside as a kid and in the military our kids were not entirely exposed to that yet.
My wife Casi and myself discussed at great lengths what we were going to do , whether it was going to be getting SXS's or a big RV trailer or just throwing a tent and cooler in the SUV and going! After many discussions and some suggestions from my buddy Mike we agreed that overlanding would be the most fun and facilitate the most adventures for our whole family! So we purchased the Expedition and started the build. I knew that a Ford Expedition was not the customary overland vehicle but it was the best platform in terms of engine power, fuel economy and interior space for our family.
Overlanding is an exhilarating and transformative adventure that offers a unique and unparalleled way to connect with nature, explore diverse landscapes, and foster a profound sense of self-discovery. It transcends the confines of traditional travel by immersing enthusiasts in remote and off-the-beaten-path locations, encouraging self-sufficiency and problem-solving skills, and fostering a deep appreciation for the beauty and vastness of our planet. Whether traversing rugged terrains, navigating through dense forests, or camping beneath star-studded skies, overlanding instills a profound sense of freedom, self-reliance, and a profound respect for the environment, making it an extraordinary and fulfilling pursuit for those seeking a deeper connection with the world around them.
What We’re Up To
How to Build an Overlanding Vehicle: Part I
Building an offroad vehicle requires careful planning & research. Know its purpose, budget, & performance requirements. Research different platforms and learn about suspension, tires, drivetrain, and safety features. Consider local regulations before making modifications. A solid plan and clear vision ensure informed decisions during the build process.
How to Build an Overlanding Vehicle Part 2: Tires, Suspension, and Body Armor
If you're a fan of off-roading, then you know that the thrill of the ride is all about conquering the terrain. But to do that, you need the right equipment. That's where a suspension lift comes in, as it raises the height of your vehicle off the ground, allowing for larger tires to be fitted. These bigger tires help improve the vehicle's performance on rugged terrain, while also giving you increased traction on muddy or sandy paths. To ensure that your off-road ride is as safe as it is exhilarating, it's important to have skid plates in place. These protect your engine and other vital components from damage caused by rocks, tree stumps and other hazards. With the right suspension lift and tire upgrades, along with sturdy skid plates, your off-road vehicle can handle even the toughest obstacles with ease. And by reducing the need for towing and repairs, you can enjoy your adventure without worrying about getting stuck or sidelined.
How to Build an Overlanding Vehicle Part 3: What is the Best Sleep System?
A rooftop tent is a great way to take your camping experience to the next level. When looking for a rooftop tent, durability and quality are important factors to consider. Check the material of the tent and make sure it can withstand harsh weather conditions, like rain and wind. Another important factor is size- look for a tent that fits your vehicle and can accommodate the number of people you plan to sleep in it. Ease of setup is also something to consider, especially if you plan on moving the tent frequently. Look for a tent that is easy to set up, with clear instructions. Additionally, a rooftop tent with good ventilation and windows will ensure a comfortable experience. Finally, consider the weight of the tent- it should be light enough to transport but also sturdy enough to withstand wind and other elements.
